This is one of my favorite paranormal romance books ever! I love Christine Feehan’s Dark series, but this book is way better than any of those, and that’s saying a lot. I wish she had some other standalones like this one because it is such a good read that I have now re-read it several times and enjoyed it each time.

The story centers around a woman desperate to save her brother who has been condemned to death by a neighboring ruler; her only choice is to go into the lion’s den… literally. The rumors swirling around the DeMarco lands have persisted for generations — it is impossible to breach and is protected by wild animals. Despite the fact that her guides have turned back, Isabella persists and finally reaches the home of the fabled Nicolai DeMarco. When she collapses in exhaustion after begging an audience with the reclusive man, she is tended to but treated with suspicion. When she meets the one person who can save her brother, she is prepared to do anything… but what happens when anything becomes everything?

Nicolai DeMarco is cursed — his father killed his mother, and thus, the men of the DeMarco line are fated to kill their beloved until it can be broken. And there is another hitch — they also appear as beasts to all except the one who can break the curse. When Isabella succeeds in safely entering his dominion, he knows she is the one, and when she offers anything to save her brother, he agrees to do so if she becomes his. But as he gets to know her and she him, he fears more and more that he will be the end of her. How can he keep her there knowing he is destined to kill her? How can he send her away knowing she is his only possible salvation? And what powerful entity seeks to destroy any chance they may have to be together?

The story is so well-written, and the world building is superb. The reader genuinely feels for the main characters and roots for them despite their flaws and the odds stacked against them. The paranormal elements are woven into the story so well that they feel “believable” to some extent. And the passion —- off the chains! Excellent, complex, compelling, and engaging! An incredible spin on the “Beauty and the Beast” theme with a historical fantasy romance feel. Highly recommended read!

It is the breathtaking story of a beautiful, penniless aristocrat who promises herself to the handsome, powerful, mysterious, and not wholly human Don Nicolai DeMarco in order to free her imprisoned brother—even though legend has it that the Don will destroy any woman he weds.
